What does it mean to be an Intergenerational Community?
An intergenerational community is one where people of all ages—children, youth, adults, and elders—are truly seen, heard, and included. It’s not just about having different age groups in the same room; it’s about building meaningful relationships across generations and learning from one another in ways that shape our shared faith.
In The Salvation Army, we believe that every person—no matter their age—has something valuable to bring to the table. Tamariki and rangatahi are not just the future of the church; they are an essential part of its present. When all generations come together, they share wisdom, stories, and experiences that help faith grow across every stage of life.
Why It Matters
Faith is caught, not just taught
When young people see faith lived out by older generations, it becomes real and relatable.Everyone has something to give
Kids bring energy and curiosity. Teens bring fresh perspective. Adults bring stability and guidance. Elders bring wisdom and legacy. It builds belonging
When we worship, serve, and grow together, we create a culture where everyone feels seen and valued.
How to Build It
1. Create Shared Spaces
Design programmes, worship services, and events where all ages can participate together—not just side by side, but together.
2. Encourage Cross-Generational Relationships
Pair up older mentors with younger people. Invite kids to pray for adults. Let youth lead parts of a service. Make space for storytelling and testimony from all ages.
3. Value Every Voice
Ask for input from different age groups when planning. Include children and youth in decision-making where appropriate.
4. Celebrate Together
Mark milestones like dedications, graduations, retirements, and birthdays as a whole community. These moments help us honour each other’s journeys.
What It could look like
A Messy Church gathering where grandparents and toddlers paint side by side.
A youth-led worship service with elders cheering them on.
A small group where teens and adults study the Bible together.
A camp where leaders of all ages share stories around the fire.
