WHAT IS MODERN SLAVERY?
Modern Slavery acts as an umbrella term, covering several human rights issues, of which human trafficking is one. Essentially, modern slavery is the exploitation of people for their bodies and labour. People trapped in modern slavery situations of exploitation often cannot refuse or leave because of threats, violence, coercion, deception, and/or abuse of power. Researchers estimate that close to 50 million people are enslaved across the world today.
ABOUT FIGHT FOR FREEDOM IN NZFTS
Globally, The Salvation Army has made it a priority to be active in the fight against modern slavery and human trafficking (MSHT). The mission of The Salvation Army International’s Fight for Freedom Strategy is to create, implement and ensure a strong and sustainable MSHT response in every Salvation Army territory, command, region and community, in order to strengthen its response around the eight identified actions areas: Prayer, Prevention, Protection, Partnerships, Participation, Policy, Prosecution and Proof.
Our Territory, The Salvation Army New Zealand Fiji Tonga Samoa, engaged in the Fight for Freedom in 2020 by appointing Captain Sammy Millar to the role of Territorial MSHT Response Person.
ABOUT THE YOUTH AMBASSADOR ROLE
This is a year-long voluntary position from March 2024 to December 2024. There are four positions available. The purpose of this role is to develop young people as disciples of Jesus and equip them in the Fight for Freedom (The Salvation Army’s response to modern slavery and human trafficking). Over the course of a year, you will deepen your understanding of what MSHT is and how we can be part of the solution! You will engage with people globally as well as with those in your own community! AND you will have the opportunity to create and lead a project to raise awareness of MSHT. As a Youth Ambassador, you will represent the Fight for Freedom throughout our territory, building relationships with people, raising awareness within your division/area, educating others, mobilising young people, and using your skills and strengths to advance the Fight for Freedom in New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa.
The workload for this role will likely be about one to two hours per week.
SO WHAT EXACTLY WILL YOU BE DOING?
The year will be split into two blocks, the first half will focus on furthering your understanding of MSHT and The Salvation Army’s response.
You will complete The Salvation Army’s Global Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Response Certificate. This includes 13 online modules, providing comprehensive training to strengthen your understanding of how to address modern slavery and human trafficking (MSHT) from a global perspective. While also equipping you to integrate and implement the Freedom Action Framework, TSA’s eight response areas in your own territory, region, and/or community. This certificate takes approximately 15 hours to complete and is offered through Booth University College’s Corporate Learning Academy.
You will sit on our Territory’s MSHTR action group, engaging in tasks such as minute taking and leading devotions.
You will also attend at least one of the Global Community of Practice events in the year. These are gatherings of those involved with The Salvation Army’s MSHT response internationally.
The second half of the year will give you the opportunity to put into action what you have learnt in the first half of the year.
You will create and lead project(s) with the aim of raising awareness of MSHT in your local context. Projects may include developing material for International Day Against Trafficking in Persons, and Day of Prayer, preparing submissions to government, and creating resources for Corps, among many other things.
Across the whole year you will also meet with a mentor each month, who will invest in your development as a leader and support you through the year. You will also engage with set readings to further understand this issue and develop your leadership skills.
Readings and reflections may include: Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership by Ruth Haley Barton, and Challenging Evil: Dispatches from the Frontlines of Radical Justice by S. Carvosso Gauntlett and Danielle Strickland. This will go alongside weekly bible studies.

WHAT YOUNG PEOPLE WHO HAVE COMPLETED THE PROGRAMME ARE SAYING:
“'The MSHTR programme has been an amazing opportunity for myself and I am so grateful that I have had the chance to be a part of it. I have grown immensely throughout my learning of the materials and discussions. When I started the programme, I had a strong passion for justice and I had a deep drive to learn more about Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking. Now that the year is almost up, I have learnt so much and I am putting that knowledge to work by sharing it with my peers and hoping to allow others the opportunity to learn and grow. This programme has ignited my passion for God’s mission. I could not recommend this programme enough to others who want to learn more about these issues or who share the same passion for justice." – Grace
